How to Reference a Named Range in Excel
To reference a named range in Excel, follow the steps below:
1. Select the Cells Containing Your Data
Suppose you have monthly sales data in cells A1 through A12. Select the cells A1 through A12.
2. Open the Define Name Dialog Box
Click on the “Formulas” tab on the Ribbon, then click on “Define Name” in the “Defined Names” group.
3. Name the Range
In the “New Name” dialog box, type a meaningful name for your range in the Name field. Ensure the name does not include spaces and does not start with a number.
Following our example, we will name this range “MonthlySales”. Check that the “Refers to” box correctly shows the cells you selected. If correct, click “OK”.
4. Use the Named Range in a Formula
Click on the cell where you want to enter a formula. Type “=” followed by the name of the range you created.
