Follow the steps below to place a sigma mark in Excel.

1. Select the Cell Where You Want the Sigma Symbol to Appear

First, decide where you want the sigma symbol to appear in your Excel worksheet. Click on the cell where you would like the symbol to be placed. This action highlights the cell, indicating it’s active and ready for you to insert content. 

For our example, we will choose cell A1.

2. Go to the ‘Insert’ Tab and Open the Symbol Dialog

To find the sigma symbol, go to the ‘Insert’ tab located in the upper menu bar of Excel. Look for the ‘Symbol’ option on the far right side of the toolbar. Click on it to open a new dialog box where various symbols are displayed.

3. Locate and Select the Sigma Symbol

In the Symbol dialog box, type “03A3” in the ‘Character code’ box to quickly find the uppercase sigma (Σ) symbol. For lowercase sigma (σ), type “03C3.” In our example, we will choose the uppercase sigma (Σ) symbol.

4. Insert the Sigma Symbol into Your Excel Sheet

Select the sigma symbol by clicking on it, then click the ‘Insert’ button. This action will place the sigma symbol into the cell you previously activated. 

You will see the symbol appear immediately in the selected cell.
